Where it came from
Moderation was released as part of the Modern Horizons 2 set in 2021, an expansion designed specifically for the Modern format of Magic: The Gathering. The set aimed to introduce new, powerful cards directly into the format while simultaneously featuring nostalgic callbacks to older mechanics and lore. Moderation specifically serves as an enchantment that enforces a restrictive playstyle, limiting players to casting only one spell per turn, a mechanic that echoes classic 'stax' or control-oriented strategies often seen in competitive play.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the game known for his ethereal and painterly aesthetic. In designing the visual identity for Moderation, Voss sought to convey the theme of balance and restriction through a serene yet imposing composition. Upon its release, the card became a notable point of discussion among players who analyze the balance of the Modern format, as its static ability significantly alters the tempo of a game and requires precise timing and resource management to utilize effectively.
