Where it came from
Fury was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 set for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed specifically for the Modern format, introducing powerful cards intended to shake up competitive play. As part of a cycle of five mythic rare 'elemental incarnations,' Fury was created to provide a high-impact, reactive play style, allowing players to pitch cards from their hand to deal damage to creatures and planeswalkers upon entering the battlefield.
The card was illustrated by Victor Adame Minguez, who sought to capture the volatile and destructive nature of the elemental creature. The design focuses on fluid, abstract forms of fire and rage that mirror the card's ability to clear a board of small threats instantly. Upon its release, the card saw significant competitive adoption, eventually becoming a staple in multiple formats before undergoing high-profile adjustments in sanctioned tournament play.
