Where it came from
Moderation was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 expansion, a direct-to-Modern set designed specifically to introduce powerful, nostalgia-driven, and mechanically unique cards into the format. The card serves as a top-down design inspired by the classic philosophy of blue-white control decks, aiming to translate the restrictive, balanced nature of a 'moderated' game state into a static enchantment that limits both players to casting only one spell per turn.
The artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent figure in the Magic: The Gathering artistic community known for her elegant and high-fantasy aesthetic. For this piece, Villeneuve focused on themes of equilibrium and stillness, utilizing a color palette that aligns with the card's color identity. Upon its release, the design was noted by players for its niche utility in specific control strategies, praised for its clear visual language and its ability to effectively alter the tempo of a game.
