Where it came from
Underworld Hermit was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed specifically for the Modern format, drawing heavily from the game's expansive history to introduce new cards with complex interactions and mechanics, such as the squirrel-themed synergies found in this card. The card reflects the set's intent to revitalize older archetypes while providing depth for experienced players.
The illustration was created by artist Bryan Sola, who focused on capturing the dark, subterranean atmosphere of the character. The design leans into the thematic aesthetic of the 'Jund' color identity—black, red, and green—which often centers on sacrifice and graveyard utility. Upon its release, the card was recognized for its efficiency in token-generation strategies, becoming a notable inclusion for players focused on building thematic squirrel decks.
