The Morph mechanic itself debuted in the 2002 Onslaught set, allowing players to cast cards face-down as generic 2/2 creatures, and this specific token was created to serve as a visual marker for those creatures during gameplay.

The artwork for this token was commissioned by Seb McKinnon, an artist highly regarded within the Magic community for his ethereal, surrealist style.
