Where it came from
The Whale token was released as part of the Masters 25 set for Magic: The Gathering in 2018. This set was designed to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the game by featuring cards and tokens that referenced the rich history of the franchise, aiming to evoke nostalgia among long-term players while providing useful gameplay components for modern formats.
The art for this token was created by Greg Staples, a long-time contributor to the game's aesthetic identity. In designing this piece, the artist sought to capture the majestic and imposing nature of a sea creature within the specific visual language of the game, resulting in an illustration that emphasizes scale and fluid motion, which was well-received for its atmospheric contribution to the token lineup.
