Where it came from
Mount Velus Manticore was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 set for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed specifically for the Modern format, aiming to introduce powerful cards that balance nostalgia with new mechanical depth. The card features a classic creature type from the game's long history, reimagined with an ability that emphasizes the aggressive, combat-focused nature of red-aligned decks within the set's draft environment.
The artwork was created by illustrator Randy Vargas, who focused on capturing the creature's formidable presence and the intense heat of its volcanic habitat. Vargas utilized a dynamic composition to emphasize the manticore's predatory movement, aligning with the design team's goal of creating impactful, high-rarity creatures that feel both ancient and immediate. Upon release, it was well-regarded by players for its synergy with other red creatures, cementing its role as a solid inclusion in limited formats.
