Where it came from
Junk Winder was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 set for the collectible card game Magic: The Gathering. As a product designed specifically for experienced players rather than standard introductory formats, the set focused on complex interactions and meta-game shifts. This card was introduced to support blue-aligned strategies involving token creation and tempo control, drawing inspiration from the game's long history of 'tap-down' mechanics.
The art was provided by Simon Dominic, who leaned into the scavenger aesthetic common to the set's setting. The illustration depicts a creature constructed from discarded mechanical scraps, reflecting the card's function of manipulating game objects through a recycling-themed design. It was generally received by the community as a potent utility piece in limited formats, valued for its synergy with cards that create creature tokens, effectively locking down opponents' assets through repeated activation.
