Provenance

Where it came from

The International Collectors' Edition (ICE) was released by Wizards of the Coast in 1993 as a non-tournament legal set intended for collectors who had missed the initial printings of Magic: The Gathering. These cards were produced with square corners and a gold-bordered back to distinguish them from the tournament-legal Alpha, Beta, and Unlimited editions, providing an accessible way for players to own iconic cards from the Power Nine, like the Mox Emerald, which were otherwise becoming prohibitively expensive and rare.

The artwork for the Mox Emerald was created by Dan Frazier, whose distinctive style defined the aesthetic of the original Moxen series. By focusing on a minimalist, jewel-centric design, Frazier’s work emphasizes the powerful, artifact-based nature of the card. While these cards were initially received with mixed feelings due to their lack of tournament legality, they have since become highly sought-after pieces for historical preservation and personal collections due to their high-quality card stock and connection to the game’s formative era.
