Where it came from
Munda's Vanguard was released in 2016 as part of the Oath of the Gatewatch expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a rare creature card within the Zendikar setting, focusing on the Allied color mechanic intended to reward players for building decks with specific, synergistic color combinations during the block's gameplay cycle.
The card's art was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the game. Voss utilized a dynamic, heroic visual style to capture the essence of the Zendikar resistance, employing high-contrast lighting and active posing to emphasize the Vanguard's role as a rallying figure in the battle against the Eldrazi titans.
