Where it came from
Mundungu was released in 1997 as part of the Visions expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a set, Visions was designed to push the boundaries of card mechanics and introduce new keyword abilities, following the success of the Mirage block. The art for this card, depicting a mystical, somewhat eerie figure, aligns with the set's broader themes of African-inspired mythology and dark fantasy.
The illustration was created by the artist Una Fricker, who contributed several pieces to the set. Her work on the card captures the atmospheric, textured aesthetic prevalent in the mid-nineties era of the game, focusing on evocative character designs that helped define the visual identity of the Mirage block for players at the time.
