Parasitic Impetus

Parasitic Impetus was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate expansion. This set was designed to capture the flavor and mechanics of the Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms setting, specifically drawing inspiration from the Baldur's Gate video game franchise. The card belongs to a cycle of 'Impetus' enchantments, a series of spells intended for the Commander multiplayer format that encourage conflict by forcing affected creatures to attack opponents other than the controller.

The artwork for this piece was created by illustrator Campbell White, who leaned into the dark, necrotic aesthetic associated with the item's mechanical function. By pairing a debuff effect with a mandatory attack trigger, the design team sought to provide players with political tools to influence board states. Upon its debut, the card was received as a functional staple for black-aligned Commander decks, noted for its ability to neutralize threats while simultaneously acting as a goad effect to disrupt the plans of opposing players.
