Where it came from
Mystic Forge was originally introduced in the 2019 Core Set 2020 as a powerful engine for colorless decks, specifically designed to reward players for running high densities of artifact cards by allowing them to cast spells directly from the top of their library. It quickly established itself as a staple in formats like Modern and Legacy, where its ability to generate significant card advantage made it a centerpiece for combo-oriented strategies.
The version from The Brothers' War Retro Artifacts set features a stylized, artifact-frame aesthetic that pays homage to the history of Magic: The Gathering's mechanical and mechanical-themed expansions. The design highlights the card's utility in a setting centered on the conflict between Urza and Mishra, framing the card as an ancient, rediscovered piece of technology consistent with the set's narrative of excavating powerful relics from a bygone era.
