Natural Order was released in the 1997 Portal set, which was designed as an entry-level product for new Magic: The Gathering players. The set utilized a simplified rules framework that omitted instants and phased out complex timing interactions, aiming to lower the barrier to entry for those intimidated by the dense mechanics of the core game. Within this environment, Natural Order served as a powerful, high-impact sorcery that demonstrated the potential for significant board state acceleration.

The card’s illustration was created by Alan Rabinowitz, who captured the raw, primal essence of the game's green mana philosophy. His artwork features a striking depiction of a massive creature emerging from the flora, grounding the card's mechanical ability—sacrificing a small creature to summon a titan directly from the library—in a thematic context of natural evolution. Despite its debut in a beginner-focused set, the card’s immense power level quickly led to its adoption in competitive formats, where it remains a foundational strategy for green-aligned decks.
