Provenance

Where it came from

Nausea was originally printed in the 1999 Urza's Destiny expansion, designed as a black sorcery that provides a modest but efficient board-wide penalty to creature toughness. The spell reflects the bleak, gothic aesthetic of the Phyrexian-dominated narrative arc, depicting a sudden corruption of the battlefield. By the time it was included in the 2016 Eternal Masters set, the card had become a staple of low-curve strategies, valued for its ability to clear tokens or weaken small creatures in limited formats.

For the Eternal Masters printing, Brazilian artist Willian Murai reimagined the art, moving away from the more abstract, surrealist style of the original. Murai’s illustration focuses on a visceral, tangible manifestation of decay, utilizing dark, moody lighting to ground the spell in a more cinematic fantasy style. His work was well-received by players for its technical proficiency and its ability to communicate the card's function—a creeping, inescapable rot—with clarity and atmospheric depth.
