Nausea

Nausea first appeared in the Urza's Saga expansion in 1998, designed as a black-aligned enchantment that imposes a static penalty to the power and toughness of all creatures. It was intended to function as a tool for controlling small-creature swarms, reflecting the game's evolving mechanics regarding global board adjustments. The card was reprinted in Eighth Edition in 2003, which marked a significant milestone for the game as it introduced the modern card frame design with a more minimalist aesthetic and updated layout meant to improve readability and visual consistency across the game's growing catalogue.

The art for the Eighth Edition printing was rendered by Bradley Williams. His interpretation moves away from the more visceral, grotesque imagery associated with early Magic: The Gathering horror tropes, instead opting for a more abstract and haunting representation of decay. This transition toward a more polished and streamlined visual language was a core component of the Eighth Edition design philosophy, which aimed to revitalize the brand's identity for a new generation of players while maintaining the thematic depth of the game's core color pie.
