Provenance

Where it came from

Nausea first appeared in the Urza's Saga set in 1998, but the version from Seventh Edition, released in 2001, marked the first time the card featured the modern white-border aesthetic typical of Core Sets at the time. The card was designed as a low-cost, global effect that punishes decks relying on numerous small creatures, reflecting the strategic 'weenie' hate cards common in early Magic: The Gathering gameplay.

The artwork for this iteration was crafted by Greg Staples, who moved away from the more visceral, grotesque depictions of the original printing toward a more atmospheric, haunting visual style. Seventh Edition itself was a significant release as it was the first Core Set to introduce the current card frame design, and Staples' contribution helped solidify the card's grim identity within the broader, transitional era of the game.
