Where it came from
New Horizons was released in 2017 as part of the Ixalan expansion, a set centered on a vibrant, Mesoamerican-inspired plane filled with pirates, dinosaurs, and explorers. The card fits into the set's mechanical theme of exploration and growth, functioning as a mana-ramp spell that rewards players for navigating the untamed jungles of the plane. Its design reflects the set's focus on the 'Explore' mechanic, which allows players to reveal the top card of their library to gain benefits, tying the card's function directly to the narrative of discovering new territory.
The card features illustration by artist Magali Villeneuve, who is renowned for her work within the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. Villeneuve’s aesthetic for this piece emphasizes the lush, overgrown environments of Ixalan, capturing the sense of wonder and impending discovery inherent to the set’s lore. Upon its release, the card was received as a solid utility piece for green-aligned decks in the Limited format, praised for its ability to smooth out mana bases while providing a minor power boost to creatures, aligning well with the set's overall adventurous tone.
