Where it came from
New Horizons was released in 2022 as part of the Warhammer 40,000 Commander set for Magic: The Gathering. This set marked a significant crossover between Wizards of the Coast’s trading card game and Games Workshop’s iconic tabletop wargame, designed to bring the grim darkness of the 41st millennium into the commander format. The card itself serves as a staple land-ramp utility, reflecting the expansionist and colonizing nature of the Imperium of Man within the lore.
The art was created by illustrator Antonio José Manzanedo, who has a long history of contributing visceral, high-fantasy and science-fiction imagery to the Magic: The Gathering catalog. In this piece, Manzanedo sought to capture the aesthetic of Imperial architectural expansion, blending the utilitarian brutality of the Warhammer 40,000 universe with the distinct visual language of Magic card frames. It was well-received by players for both its functional utility in decks and its successful integration of the two distinct intellectual properties.
