Where it came from
Released as part of the Magic: The Gathering 'Magic Origins' promotional set at San Diego Comic-Con in 2015, this card is one of a cycle of five double-faced planeswalker cards featuring exclusive black-on-black matte artwork. The set was designed to commemorate the origin stories of iconic planeswalkers, and this specific iteration of Nissa Revane was illustrated by the artist Magali Villeneuve, who employed a stark, stylized aesthetic that stood in contrast to the traditional full-color versions found in standard booster packs.
The promotional cycle was received with significant interest by the collector community due to its limited availability and unique minimalist art style. These cards were distributed primarily at the convention, establishing them as prestigious centerpieces for fans of high-end Magic: The Gathering collectibles. The design process focused on honoring the character's narrative evolution from an elf shaman into a powerful planeswalker, cementing her role as a central figure in the game's evolving lore.
