Where it came from
Nissa, Vastwood Seer was released as part of the Magic Origins set in 2015, serving as one of the cycle of double-faced planeswalker cards that represented the origin stories of key characters in the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. This specific version, marked with the 189s collector number, was distributed as a promotional card, featuring unique alternate art that distinguishes it from the standard version found in booster packs.
The card was designed to mechanically evolve alongside the player, beginning as a legendary creature and transforming into a planeswalker upon meeting specific game-state requirements. The illustration for this promotional variant was handled by artist Magali Villeneuve, who sought to capture Nissa Revane's deep connection to the land of Zendikar and her transition from a dedicated elf scout to a powerful planeswalker, a design choice that was well-received for its cinematic quality and thematic cohesion.
