Where it came from
Nissa, Vastwood Seer was introduced in the 2015 Magic: The Gathering set Magic Origins, a collection designed to chronicle the backstories and 'spark' ignitions of five prominent planeswalker characters. As a double-faced card, it reflects the narrative progression of the elf Nissa Revane, transforming from a legendary creature into a powerful planeswalker once a specific mechanical condition is met. This design choice was intended to immerse players in the character's personal growth and evolution within the game's lore.
The card was illustrated by Wesley Burt, who worked to capture Nissa's connection to the natural world and her mastery over elemental magic. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the player base for its versatility and its ability to provide consistent card advantage. It became a staple in various tournament formats, cementing its place as a definitive representation of the character's role as a guardian of Zendikar.
