Noxious Bayou

Noxious Bayou was released as part of the Mystery Booster Playtest Cards, a unique set distributed by Wizards of the Coast at MagicFest events starting in late 2019 and continuing into 2021. These cards were designed as an internal experiment, featuring unconventional mechanics and aesthetics that pushed the boundaries of standard gameplay. They were primarily intended to evoke the feel of early prototype cards, often utilizing 'playtest' stickers or simplified layouts to distinguish them from the official tournament-legal card pool.

The design of the Mystery Booster Playtest series was a collaborative effort by the Wizards of the Coast design team, led by Gavin Verhey. The visual style was intentionally raw, often mimicking the look of internal documents used during the R&D process, such as handwritten annotations or placeholder art. The community reception was overwhelmingly positive, as players appreciated the meta-commentary and the whimsical, experimental nature of the cards, which often explored design space that would otherwise be deemed too chaotic for regular set releases.
