Provenance

Where it came from

Ophiomancer was introduced in the Commander 2013 product line, a series of preconstructed decks designed specifically for the multiplayer Commander format. Released by Wizards of the Coast in November 2013, the card debuted in the 'Power Hungry' deck, which focused on sacrifice-themed mechanics and creature token generation. Its design intent was to provide players with a repeatable source of value, incentivizing aggressive play by rewarding the user with a snake token during each upkeep as long as they control no other snakes.

The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Lucas Graciano, who utilized a moody, atmospheric style to capture the sinister essence of the Ophiomancer. Graciano focused on the tactile details of the conjurer’s robes and the rhythmic, ritualistic nature of snake summoning. The card was well-received by the player base upon its release, quickly becoming a staple in black-aligned Commander decks for its synergy with sacrifice outlets and its ability to consistently produce board presence without further resource investment.
