Where it came from
Ophiomancer was originally released in the 2013 Commander set, gaining significant popularity as a repeatable token generator that creates a 1/1 Snake with deathtouch at the beginning of each upkeep. Its inclusion in the 2021 Secrets of Strixhaven Commander set served to reprint the card for a new generation of players, maintaining its utility as a potent defensive and offensive tool for black-aligned decks that leverage sacrifice triggers and board control.
The card’s artwork, illustrated by Lucas Graciano, captures the essence of the character as a practitioner of dark, serpentine arts. Graciano’s style emphasizes atmospheric lighting and textured detail, which serves to ground the Ophiomancer within the gothic and academic aesthetic of the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. The design remains highly regarded in the community for its efficiency in multiplayer formats, where its ability to trigger on every player's turn provides substantial value over time.
