Where it came from
Opposition Agent, card number 19 from the 1990 Marvel Universe Series 1 trading card set, reflects the intense industry interest in collectible card games and comic memorabilia at the start of the decade. Produced by Impel Marketing, the set was designed to catalog the vast roster of Marvel Comics characters, bringing together legendary heroes and villains under a consistent, high-quality aesthetic that defined the era's trading card boom.
The art featured on these cards was sourced from a collaborative effort involving various Marvel staff artists tasked with capturing iconic character poses. This series is remembered for its distinct border design and biographical text on the reverse, which served as a primer for new readers and a checklist for seasoned collectors. It remains a hallmark of 1990s pop culture, credited with formalizing the collectibility of comic art in a portable, standardized format.
