Where it came from
Opposition Agent was released in 2020 as part of the Commander Legends set, the first full expansion designed specifically for the Commander format of Magic: The Gathering. The card was crafted to introduce a high-impact, disruptive element to games by allowing players to interact with their opponents' library searches, a common mechanic in the game that had previously been difficult to penalize directly.
Illustrated by artist Livia Prima, the card's visual design emphasizes a sense of stealth and infiltration, depicting the agent looming over the game board with a shadowed, sinister aesthetic. Upon its introduction, the card sparked significant discussion among the player base due to its powerful ability to steal cards and gain information, rapidly becoming a staple inclusion in competitive decks that utilize black mana.
