Where it came from
Ornithopter of Paradise was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 set for the collectible card game Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a thematic and functional homage to the iconic Birds of Paradise, reimagining the classic creature as a mechanical construct fitting the artifact-heavy themes prevalent in Modern-era expansions. By blending the established utility of mana-fixing dorks with the artifact subtype, it provided players with a versatile tool that bridges the gap between creature-based acceleration and affinity-style strategies.
The artwork for this specific iteration was illustrated by Ryan Pancoast, who leaned into a blend of organic inspiration and industrial design. Pancoast’s goal was to evoke the graceful movement of natural flight through metallic wings and gears, creating a piece that feels both delicate and engineered. Upon its debut, the card was well-received by the competitive community for its utility in color-intensive decks and its synergy with artifact-related mechanics, cementing its status as a staple for players navigating the complexities of the Modern format.
