What it does

When this enchantment enters, target creature phases out until this enchantment leaves the battlefield. Tap that creature as it phases in this way. (Auras and Equipment phase out with it. While permanents are phased out, they're treated as though they don't exist.)

Provenance

Where it came from

Oubliette was originally printed in the 1994 Arabian Nights expansion for Magic: The Gathering, serving as a complex black enchantment designed to temporarily exile creatures. The card remained a cult classic among enthusiasts for decades due to its unique, albeit rules-heavy, interaction with the game state, which eventually led to it being featured in the Secret Lair series as a special commemorative print.

The Secret Lair drop version, numbered 1794, reimagines the card with distinct, evocative artwork that leans into the oppressive and subterranean themes of its namesake. By commissioning specialized artists for these drops, Wizards of the Coast sought to provide long-time players with a visually elevated iteration of a card that, despite its mechanical idiosyncrasies, remains a touchstone of Magic's early history and high-fantasy aesthetic.
