Provenance

Where it came from

Counterspell is one of the foundational cards in the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, originally appearing in the Alpha set of 1993. This specific version, numbered 2497, is part of the Secret Lair drop series, which serves as a platform for Wizards of the Coast to release specialized, limited-run cards featuring unique artistic treatments that depart from the standard visual language of the game.

The art for this iteration was created by the artist Othellonyx, who utilized a distinct, minimalist, and ethereal aesthetic to reimagine the iconic spell. By stripping back the complex mechanical imagery often associated with the card's history, the design emphasizes the core concept of negation and mystical interference. Upon its release, the card was well-received by collectors who prioritize artistic variety and the inclusion of niche, stylized illustrations within their decks.
