Provenance

Where it came from

Over My Dead Bodies was released in 2017 as part of the Unstable set for Magic: The Gathering. As an Un-set, it was designed specifically for casual, novelty play, allowing Wizards of the Coast to experiment with mechanics that break the traditional rules of the game. The card features the unique 'augment' mechanic, which allows players to combine halves of different creatures to create new, often humorous, stat lines and abilities.

The card was illustrated by Bram Sels, who leaned into the zany, mad-scientist aesthetic defined by the set's primary setting of Goblin Explosioneers. The design intent was to provide a chaotic, interactive experience that rewards players for stepping outside of competitive norms. Upon release, it was well-received by the community for its creative approach to deck-building and its commitment to the lighthearted, surreal tone established by the previous sets in the series.
