Where it came from
Parasitic Impetus was released in 2021 as part of the Commander expansion for the Magic: The Gathering set Strixhaven: School of Mages. The card belongs to the 'Impetus' cycle, a series of aura enchantments designed to disrupt multiplayer combat by forcing affected creatures to attack opponents other than their controller. It reflects the set's academic theme, specifically the Witherbloom College, which emphasizes the cycle of life and death through black and green mana.
The artwork was illustrated by Svetlin Velinov, a long-time contributor to the game known for his expressive character designs. His illustration for this card emphasizes the parasitic, life-draining nature of the spell, utilizing the visceral aesthetic associated with the Witherbloom aesthetic. Upon release, the card was well-received by the Commander community as a functional tool for political play, balancing combat incentives with the life-gain mechanics central to the black-green color identity.
