Where it came from
Parasitic Impetus was released in 2020 as part of the Commander 2020 set, specifically featured in the Timeless Wisdom preconstructed deck. This card belongs to the 'Impetus' cycle, a group of Aura enchantments designed to disrupt multiplayer games by forcing opponents' creatures to attack someone other than the controller. The card was conceptualized during a period when Wizards of the Coast was aggressively expanding the reach and political utility of Commander-specific mechanics.
The illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, whose work often leans into dark, visceral fantasy aesthetics. Kieryluk sought to capture the parasitic and corruptive nature of the enchantment, visually representing the card's mechanical function of leaching life from opponents while goading their creatures into combat. Within the Magic: The Gathering community, the card is recognized as a staple of 'Politics' and 'Goad' archetypes for its efficient ability to deflect aggression and provide incremental value.
