Where it came from
The Unfinity pin collection was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2022 to accompany the Unfinity set, the fourth installment in the silver-bordered Un-series of Magic: The Gathering. These cards, including the pin-themed variants, were designed to celebrate the carnival and space-themed aesthetic of the set, blending retro-futuristic science fiction tropes with the lighthearted, meta-narrative humor characteristic of the series. The pins themselves were illustrated by various artists within the Magic: The Gathering stable to offer a stylized, whimsical contrast to the game’s traditional high-fantasy art direction.
The design of these pin-style cards was intended to mimic the appearance of physical enamel collectibles, utilizing vibrant colors and distinct outlines to make them pop against the card stock. Upon release, the set was received as a polarizing but creative experiment, particularly for its introduction of black-bordered legality for certain cards. The pin variants specifically served as a dedicated aesthetic sub-line, aimed at players who enjoy novelty and thematic customization within their card collections.
