Piru, the Volatile // Piru, the Volatile

Piru, the Volatile was originally created for the 2001 set Invasion, designed as a legendary creature representing a powerful, ancient dragon associated with the apocalyptic Phyrexian invasion of Dominaria. The card was reimagined for the Modern Horizons 2 Art Series to celebrate the game's rich history, featuring the original illustration by Dave Dorman. Dorman’s work is characterized by a high-fantasy, painterly aesthetic that emphasizes the dragon's imposing scale and chaotic nature, capturing the volatile essence described in the card's mechanics.

The Art Series cards were introduced as a collectible subset within Modern Horizons 2, designed to highlight the high-quality digital and traditional illustrations that define the Magic: The Gathering visual identity. These cards are notable for being printed without text boxes, shifting the focus entirely to the artwork. This presentation was received warmly by the community, offering players and collectors a chance to appreciate the technical details of the artists' compositions without the distraction of game rules, effectively elevating the cards to the status of small-format gallery prints.
