Where it came from
The Priority Avenger was released in 2021 as part of the Mystery Booster: Convention Edition playtest card set. These cards were designed by Wizards of the Coast as a meta-commentary on the game's development process, featuring intentionally experimental mechanics and 'playtest' aesthetics. They were primarily distributed in convention-exclusive booster packs to offer players a glimpse into the internal R&D process, functioning as both a playable novelty and a tongue-in-cheek artifact of game design.
The card’s visual identity mimics the raw, unpolished look of internal development prototypes, utilizing a stark, minimalist card frame that contrasts with traditional Magic: The Gathering card art. Its design focuses on the 'Priority' keyword, a mechanic that plays with the game's turn structure, highlighting the developers' interest in testing how players manage the stack and timing. Upon release, the set was received warmly by collectors and casual players for its humorous take on card balance and its status as a limited-run curiosity within the game's history.
