Where it came from
Prosper, Tome-Bound was released in 2021 as part of the Adventures in the Forgotten Realms Commander set, a crossover product that integrated the lore and mechanics of Dungeons & Dragons into the Magic: The Gathering card game. The card was designed to function as a focal point for a Rakdos-colored deck, emphasizing the D&D themes of treasure hoarding and magical improvisation through its ability to exile cards and generate Treasure tokens.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the game whose style is known for atmospheric lighting and expressive character work. Prosper is depicted as a powerful warlock bound to a sentient tome, a design intended to capture the flavor of a pact-maker tapping into forbidden knowledge. Upon release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for its unique synergy with exile-based mechanics and its effective engine for ramping resources during gameplay.
