Where it came from
Prosper, Tome-Bound was released in 2021 as part of the Adventures in the Forgotten Realms Commander set, a crossover project that integrated the thematic elements of Dungeons & Dragons into the Magic: The Gathering card game. As the face commander for the Planar Portal deck, the card was designed to highlight the high-fantasy narrative mechanics of the D&D setting, specifically focusing on the character of a warlock bound by a sentient, cursed tome.
The card was illustrated by Campbell White, who leaned into the dark, arcane aesthetic associated with warlock lore to emphasize the character’s connection to cosmic knowledge and sacrifice. Within the community, Prosper was widely praised for its unique mechanical implementation of the 'exile' zone as a resource, which allowed players to cast spells from exile and generated treasure tokens, quickly cementing its status as a staple for Rakdos-colored commander decks.
