Where it came from
Their Number Is Legion is a rare, serialized version of the card released as part of the Magic: The Gathering Warhammer 40,000 Commander set in 2022. This collection marked a significant collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop, integrating the grim darkness of the Warhammer 40,000 universe into the mechanics of Magic. The card features art depicting the Necron legions, reflecting the aesthetic of an ancient, mechanical race rising to reclaim the galaxy.
The card was designed to resonate with fans of both franchises, blending the Necrons' relentless, reanimating gameplay style with established Magic card mechanics. The serialized version is distinguished by its unique numbering and special foil treatment, which were intended to provide high-value, limited-edition chase items for collectors within the broader Commander decks. The reception among the community was focused on its aesthetic appeal and the novelty of seeing 40k lore formally adapted into the game's collectible card format.
