Where it came from
The Punchcard token was released as part of the Streets of New Capenna expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2022. This set was uniquely designed around a 1920s Art Deco-inspired aesthetic, featuring themes of organized crime, opulent noir cities, and Prohibition-era glamour. Tokens like the Punchcard were included in booster packs to represent specific game states or creatures created by cards within the set, serving as a functional yet thematic extension of the plane's industrial urban environment.
The design of the Punchcard reflects the set's retro-futuristic, bureaucratic flavor, utilizing a visual language that mimics actual vintage data-processing equipment. While the specific artist is credited within the Wizards of the Coast database for the broader set's art direction, the token series was created to enhance the immersion of the New Capenna drafting and gameplay experience. It was received by players as a charming, flavor-rich inclusion that reinforced the set's distinct visual identity compared to the high-fantasy tropes typically found in the game.
