Where it came from
Sivvi's Ruse was released in the year 2000 as part of the Nemesis expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents a pivotal moment in the lore of the Mercadian Masques block, depicting the rebellion led by the rebel leader Lin Sivvi against the manipulative forces of the Kyren and the plane's ruling elite. It was designed to showcase the strategic, underdog nature of the Rebel creature type, which became a defining mechanic for the set.
The artwork was illustrated by Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic early contributors to the game's aesthetic. His work on this card leans into the high-fantasy, dramatic flair characteristic of the era, focusing on the clandestine and tactical nature of the rebellion. Upon release, the card was received as a functional, niche utility piece that reinforced the synergy of white-aligned rebel decks, cementing its place in the history of tribal-focused gameplay.
