Where it came from
Ral's Vanguard was released as part of the Mystery Booster 2021 Playtest Cards, a unique set distributed by Wizards of the Coast for convention events. These cards were designed to explore unconventional mechanics and experimental design space that would typically not be seen in standard Magic: The Gathering sets. The cards are easily identifiable by their distinct, minimalist 'playtest' frames and lack of standard holographic stamps.
The card features the likeness of Ral Zarek, a well-known planeswalker within the Magic: The Gathering lore. The experimental design was intended to offer players a glimpse into the internal drafting and development process at Wizards of the Coast. Because these cards were produced in limited quantities for specific event environments, they have since become highly sought after by collectors interested in the evolution of game mechanics and the history of card development.
