Provenance

Where it came from

The Ramosian Lieutenant was released in 1999 as part of the Mercadian Masques expansion set for Magic: The Gathering. Set on the plane of Mercadia, the cards depicted a world dominated by trade, social hierarchies, and the secretive influence of the Phyrexian invaders. This card belongs to the Rebel creature type, a mechanic-heavy cycle that emphasized the gathering of forces from within a deck's library.

The card was illustrated by Donato Giancola, a highly regarded fantasy artist known for his sophisticated use of light and classical composition. Giancola designed the Lieutenant to embody the disciplined, militaristic aesthetic of the Ramosian soldiers who served under the charismatic leader Lin Sivvi. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its utility in Rebel-themed decks, which defined a significant portion of the competitive Standard environment during the late 1990s.
