Where it came from
Reality Acid was released in 2007 as part of the Planar Chaos set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was designed to explore an alternate timeline where the color pie of the game's mechanics was shifted, allowing blue cards like this one to interact with permanents in ways typically reserved for other colors. The card represents a departure from standard blue magic, reflecting the set’s central premise of a reality bending under the pressure of magical instability.
The artwork for Reality Acid was created by illustrator Zoltan Boros and Gabor Szikszai, a frequent collaborative duo in the game's early history. Their design for the card focuses on the visceral sensation of dissolution, utilizing swirling blues and distorted textures to convey the concept of matter being broken down. Upon its release, it was noted by players for its unique mechanics, which created a delayed-effect removal spell that felt distinct from the traditional counterspells or bounce effects common to the blue color identity.
