Provenance

Where it came from

Magus of the Library was released in 2007 as part of the Planar Chaos expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a 'timeshifted' homage to the Library of Alexandria, a notoriously powerful card from the game's earliest set that is widely considered one of the most broken artifacts in Magic history. By reinterpreting the effect as a creature, the design team sought to preserve the nostalgic essence of the original while balancing its power level for the modern game mechanics of that era.

The card was illustrated by Darrell Riche, who leaned into the aesthetic established by the planar shift theme, which explored alternate timelines of the Magic multiverse. The art depicts a scholarly figure in an environment reminiscent of a great archive, bridging the gap between the ancient, static power of the original land card and the interactive, creature-based design philosophy that defined the Planar Chaos set. It was received by players as a clever, albeit less impactful, tribute to the legendary history of the game.
