Where it came from
Reservoir Kraken was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set is themed around a 1920s Art Deco-inspired metropolis ruled by five demon-led crime families. This card specifically represents the influence of the Obscura, a faction of mages and spies who utilize surveillance and information control to maintain their power within the city.
The card was illustrated by Victor Adame Minguez, who depicted the creature as a massive, tentacled entity emerging from the urban water supply, fitting the set's noir-fantasy aesthetic. It was designed as a rare blue creature featuring a unique triggered ability that rewards players for casting multiple spells in a turn by tapping down opponents' creatures, reflecting the Kraken's disruptive presence in the intricate political and magical landscape of New Capenna.
