Where it came from
Reservoir Kraken was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set is themed around a 1920s Art Deco-inspired metropolis controlled by five warring crime families, with the Kraken serving as a thematic element representing the urban threats lurking within the city's infrastructure.
The card was illustrated by Victor Adame Minguez, who utilized a bold, stylized aesthetic that aligns with the set's noir-fantasy atmosphere. Mechanically, the creature is designed to reward players for casting multiple spells in a single turn, reflecting the frantic, high-stakes nature of the New Capenna setting, and it was widely utilized in the Limited format upon its debut.
