Provenance

Where it came from

The Rod of Ruin was printed as part of the 1994 Summer Magic set, colloquially known by the internal codename Edgar. This set was produced by Wizards of the Coast to address severe printing errors and color balance issues found in the earlier Revised Edition of Magic: The Gathering. Due to a warehouse fire and internal concerns regarding its quality, the vast majority of the print run was destroyed, leading to its extreme scarcity in the secondary market.

The artwork for the card was created by artist Dan Frazier. As part of the artifacts cycle, the design reflects the functional, utilitarian aesthetic consistent with early Magic: The Gathering cards. Because the Summer Magic set was never officially released to the public through standard retail channels, the card remains a prized curiosity among collectors, valued more for its unique production history and technical status as a set prototype than for its gameplay utility.
