Where it came from
Rona, Disciple of Gix was released as part of the Dominaria set in 2018, featuring distinct promotional art to celebrate the return of the Magic: The Gathering narrative to the plane of Dominaria. The card was designed to reflect the character's role as an artificer serving the remnants of the Phyrexians, specifically following the influence of the villain Gix. The mechanics of the card, allowing players to exile cards from their hand to draw, were crafted to represent her obsession with artifacts and lost lore.
The promotional illustration was executed by artist Magali Villeneuve, who is well-regarded for her detailed character work within the game's expansive multiverse. Her design focuses on Rona’s mechanical augmentations and her scholarly yet ominous presence, grounding the character in the dark aesthetic of Phyrexian corruption. The card was received by the player base as an intriguing utility piece, particularly valued by those interested in graveyard synergies and complex artifact-based strategies.
