Where it came from
Oath of Teferi was released as part of the Dominaria set in 2018, specifically appearing as a promotional card for the set's prerelease events. The card reflects the narrative return of the legendary planeswalker Teferi to his home plane of Dominaria, a pivotal moment in the Magic: The Gathering storyline. Mechanically, it serves as an enchantment that supports planeswalker-heavy decks, fitting into the strategic themes of the expansion which focused on historical figures and powerful artifacts.
The artwork for this particular version was created by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent illustrator in the fantasy gaming space. Villeneuve sought to capture the contemplative and time-bending essence of Teferi as he reclaims his legacy, utilizing a color palette that emphasizes the ethereal nature of his chronomancy. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its unique ability to allow multiple planeswalker activations, solidifying its place as a staple in Commander formats and a recognizable piece of modern card design.
